Cultural Events:

Indian PresentationThe Seneca Nation invites native and non-native alike to join us in our  celebrations of Seneca heritage and culture:

Iroquois Post 1587 Veterans Pow Wow
The Iroquois Post 1587 Veterans Pow Wow will be held July 13-15, 2012 at the Cattaraugus Community Center (12767 Route 438 Irving, NY 14081) and will feature family flag honorings, food and craft vendors, educational exhibits, western style and smoke dance competitions and drum competitions. “The theme of this year’s pow wow is “Honor All Veterans,” said Bud Thompson, co-chair of the Iroquois Post 1587 Veterans Pow Wow. “This reflects the Seneca people’s deep respect and appreciation for all veterans, both native and non-native.”

Seneca Pow Wow 2012
The following weekend, July 21-22, the “Seneca Pow Wow 2012” will be held at Veteran’s Park on Broad Street in Salamanca, NY and will feature drum and dance competitions as well as food and craft vendors. Seneca Pow wow 2012 committee chair, Pamela Bowen estimates that pow wows began being held on Seneca Nation territories in the late 1980’s. “Although pow wows are not a part of our culture historically, my understanding is that early organizers began holding them on our territories as a way to extend our hand in friendship to our neighbors and other Nations from across the country. It is a borrowed custom but we try to infuse the pow wow with our own unique Seneca culture by showcasing our Iroquois dance styles, such as the smoke dance competition and various social dances which highlight our local Seneca singers and instruments.””

Fall Festival: Another opportunity to experience the rich culture of the Seneca Nation is at the annual Fall Festival, held the second weekend in September, behind the Saylor Building on Route 438 in Irving, NY. The Fall Festival includes a parade, art show, vendors, artist demonstrations, traditional dancing, sporting events, traditional foods and much more.
